Every solopreneur needs to understand the numerous ways in which they can market their business. Traditional marketing techniques such as television and billboards have been all that was available up until a few decades ago, but small business owners now have the Internet to expand their marketing campaigns to whole new stratospheres. It’s not likely that a small business owner doesn’t understand how important social media marketing is, but unfortunately, many don’t understand how important having a Yelp business page actually is.
Yelp is, on its surface, a consumer review website. Members of the site can sign in and leave reviews and ratings on the businesses that they’ve visited. With tens of millions of users frequenting the website every month, these ratings become quite prominent on Google’s and other search engine’s returned web results. Many business owners feel as if there is nothing that they can do about negative reviews on this site, but they are absolutely incorrect.
The great thing about Yelp is the fact that it’s more than it appears to be. It’s actually a social media website that can connect business owners with past, present and future patrons. Solopreneurs can even send private messages to individuals who have left reviews on their business. This provides the amazing ability to use Yelp as a customer service tool.
Yelp also works as an online reputation management site. This is because users can actually edit or update their previous reviews on Yelp. This gives small business owners the opportunity to please previously dissatisfied customers, and this often leads to a much better review being posted in the initial negative one’s place.
Fortunately, Yelp can also be used with a company’s current customers. Yelp doesn’t even frown upon a business owner asking their customers to go online and leave reviews of their experiences. This is a great way for solopreneurs to elicit great reviews about their business, but this is by far not the only way that the site can be used to make a company successful.
Setting up a Yelp account is simplistic, but it’s what a small business owner does after the creation of the account that really counts. Yelp cannot be used like other social media websites like Facebook or Twitter. Fortunately, the content that is provided on these other social media sites isn’t what consumers are looking for. Posting on Yelp is more geared towards providing deals, promotions and information on events. This type of information can irritate users on other social media sites, but on Yelp, it’s exactly what the users are looking for.
Yelp is a powerful tool that every solopreneur should add to their marketing arsenal. First, however, they need to fully understand what the site is and what it is capable of. After this, setting up a successful Yelp marketing campaign is as simple as claiming a business page and optimizing it to bring in new customers. Once a small business owner uses Yelp for any amount of time, they will understand the marketing and reputation management power that lies in their hands.
